How to Install Linux Video Drivers

Linux is a free-of-charge, open source computer operating system. As of 2010, there are over 600 distributions of Linux, the most popular and user-friendly being Ubuntu. As a complete desktop environment, Ubuntu is fully customizable and comes complete with access to thousands of free applications. If your screen resolution is wrong, or youre having trouble with your video drivers, you can install new ones.

Instructions

Things Youll Need:

  • Computer with Linux Ubuntu and Internet access
  1. Step 1

Open a Linux terminal under "Applications "> "Accessories"> "Terminal" and type "wget http://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/nvidia/scripts/ubuntu/envy_0.9.8-0ubuntu10_all.deb" into it. This will download NVIDIA video drivers to your system.

  2. Step 2

Type "sudo dpkg -i envy*.deb" into the terminal. This will extract the package you just downloaded. Youll be asked for your system password. To make sure all the correct package dependencies are installed, type "sudo apt-get install -f."

  3. Step 3

Type "sudo envy -g" into the terminal. This will start the installation script for the video drivers and an auto-installer will pop up on the screen. Follow the system-specific instructions and this will complete the install. Reboot your computer.
